08 – Neil Sharum
Born in Santa Ana, CA, photographer Neil Sharum studied Fine Art Photography. A year ago, he busted out of school with a Masters in Fine Art and entered the real world, quickly finishing a book (at this time unpublished) on the bustling indie rock scene in Los Angeles.
Most of your photos are fashion oriented — what motivated you to shoot this photo?
I do have a fascination with water and submerging/emerging, but I think this shot was more motivated by the moment than anything else.
I really like the way her body’s posed — was she naturally swimming like that, or did you shout directions at her from a megaphone on the shore?
No directions really. She was just naturally swimming that way.
How did you resist jumping in when it looks so refreshing… like an ice cold lemonaid on a hot summer day…. mmmmmm lemonaid….? Did you have your boardshorts on ready to go?
Actually it was cold. Very cold. I wanted to go in, but I didn’t have any type of swimwear.
Is your model going to be mad at you that she’s on a shirt but you can’t see her face?
She won’t be mad. She’ll have a really neat secret and interesting conversation piece.
Ok, beach questions… corndogs or popcorn? flip flops or sandals? Board shorts or hot pants?
Popcorn, flip-flops, and speedos!
What was your inspiration for this photo?
I was inspired by the greenery of the east coast and nature in general.
Why this photo rather than any of your others for this shirt?
I chose this photo because of the mood and its ability to communicate universally.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
With some luck, I’m hoping you will see my work in some major magazines or art galleries.
