PacSun Collaborations – Nate Frizzell

12 – Nate Frizzell

LA based artist Nate Frizzell was kind enough to stop preparing for his upcoming show ‘Lost in the Thicket’ and collaborate with us to present to you, wonderful reader, this t-shirt. Nate tells stories in his paintings that we can all see ourselves being part of, and now you can wear one of those stories on your very own chest!

Tall barren trees have a creepy effect, were you going for that with this piece?

I wasn’t necessarily trying to make anything creepy. I’ve been working on my next solo exhibition, “Lost in the Thicket” and I think the drawing is a continuation of that idea.

I’ve noticed you like to use animal heads on human bodies — what’s your spirit animal? What animal head would you put on.. say, Brad Pitt?

They’re not so much animal “heads” as they are “masks”. I like to use masks to tell the story of the figures in the paintings. I’m not sure what animal would tell my story best. Are you trying to say I’m no Brad Pitt?

How has it been preparing for ‘Lost in the Thicket?’

Preparing for my most recent show has been pretty rough. I’m trying to progress and push my boundaries a bit with my new body of work. It’s a learning process and it can be frustrating. But everyone has been crazy nice and supportive, and I’m happy with how everything has turned out.

What was your inspiration for this piece?

Like I said before, it’s sort of a continuation of the theme of my show. “Lost in the Thicket” is all about finding you way in life and choosing a path to follow.

Why this piece rather than any of your others for this shirt?

I actually drew this just for PacSun. I like simple designs and I thought a drawing would work better than a painting.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

I will definitely keep pushing myself to develop as a painter and you’ll see me in more and more galleries in the years to come. Keep a lookout for me and my friends at Lebasse Projects.
