09 – Claire Sloan
Well well well.. look at what we’ve got here: an ultra chic t-shirt displaying 19 year old Northern California photographer Claire Sloan’s work. We like her because she focuses on the little things that slip under the rugs in our office (ok ok, we don’t have rugs, but you get the point). She’s influenced by the transition from youth to adulthood, the people she meets and the cities she greets.
First off, let’s get to the main point at issue. I think everyone wants to know the answer… Whose feet are those?
Ha! Drum roll anyone…? They’re mine.
The fashion police used to say you couldn’t wear black and brown together. What do you have to say to those outdated silly sallies? If they had it their way, what would you choose.. brown or black?
I say wear whatever you like. I actually think brown and black complement each other quite well, but if I had to choose, it really depends on a lot of things. The outfit, the mood, the weather. Black is classy and elegant, while brown is sophisticated and earthy.
What are you going to think the first time you see a kid wearing your photo on their shirt?
It’s going to be bizarre. I’ll get really giddy I’m sure. I’ll have to restrain myself from running up to them and telling them I designed it.
What was your inspiration for this photo?
I never wear heels because I’m 5’10”, and am still getting used to it. It was a beautiful day though, and I was feeling confident.
Why this photo rather than any of your others for this shirt?
I wanted to use a photograph with a strong composition that summarized myself as an artist and what my work is about. My photography is very personal and based on the intimacies of people and places in my life, so using a photo of my feet just felt right for the project.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Lots of photographs! And hopefully many gallery shows.
